ARLINGTON, VA. – Counterpart International today announced the appointment of William (Bill) Hammink to the organization’s Board of Directors.
Mr. Hammink brings to the Counterpart board more than 36 years of experience working with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), including in high-threat and conflict-afflicted countries. During his time with USAID, Mr. Hammink served in nine countries, including Afghanistan, India, Sudan, Ethiopia, Russia, West Bank/Gaza, Madagascar, Senegal, and Swaziland.
In 2013, William Hammink was sworn in as Mission Director to Afghanistan, where he directed projects to support sustainable economic growth and good governance, and for maintaining critical development gains in health and education. Prior to this assignment, he served as USAID’s Mission Director to India, where he oversaw a program addressing the critical challenges around food security, climate change, and health. Prior to his India posting, Mr. Hammink served as the USAID Mission Director in Sudan, where he helped the parties of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement implement many of the agreement’s provisions, including nationwide elections in April 2010. He also served as Mission Director to Ethiopia and as Assistant to the Administrator for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Mr. Hammink also served as the BA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) Country Director for Libya and Tunisia, based in Tunis, Tunisia, from May 2018 to May 2019. ABA ROLI is an international development program that promotes the rule of law by working with in-country partners to build sustainable institutions and societies that deliver justice, foster economic opportunity, and ensure respect for human dignity.
“We are thrilled that William Hammink has joined Counterpart International’s Board of Directors. Bill’s long and impressive career addressing complex development challenges makes him a perfect complement to our organization’s mission and vision,” says Ann Hudock, President and CEO of Counterpart International. “On behalf of the entire Counterpart Network, I welcome Bill to our Board of Directors and look forward to his partnership.”
“Bill’s diverse and extensive executive development experience on the ground in frontier countries will no doubt be an outstanding accompaniment to the existing talent of our distinguished Board members,” says Raul Herrera, Board Chair. “I am looking forward to working with Bill in furthering our mission and mandate around the world.”
