On May 13, Niger celebrated its 33rd National Day of Nigerien Women. To commemorate this important day, Counterpart’s Resilient Governance in Niger Activity partnered with the Women’s Affairs Commission of the Union of Nigerien Students at the Abdou University of Niamey and other USAID implementing partners to promote the inclusion of women in all aspects of society. The event brought together more than 400 participants—including members of the government, the university’s secretary general, students, and the director general of the treasury and public accounting. More than 60,000 people on social media followed the event, which included a public speaking competition, a culinary course, and a girls’ football match.
The event was an opportunity for Counterpart to share the remarkable work being done in Niger to increase the participation and inclusion of women, youth, and marginalized groups in governance and decision-making bodies. This video highlights the work of Counterpart and its partners in support of women’s education, preventing early marriage, and ensuring women and girls are seen as equals in Nigerian society.
